This week, I had the pleasure of attending a luncheon hosted by the Literary Society of the Southwest at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale. The guest of honor? The phenomenal Hernan Diaz, author of the captivating novel Trust.
Now, I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Let me tell you, it was fantastic! The author’s wit was sharp, his anecdotes hilarious, and his insights into the writing process of Trust were truly fascinating.
Diaz didn’t just discuss the plot (though we did get some juicy tidbits about the inspiration behind certain characters). He delved into the challenges and joys of crafting a story that has captivated readers worldwide. He shared how he developed the characters’ unique voices, the meticulous research that went into building the historical backdrop, and the surprising turns his own writing process took.
There were moments of laugh-out-loud humor, thoughtful pauses that sparked contemplation, and even a few gasps of surprise as Diaz revealed some behind-the-scenes secrets about Trust. By the end of the luncheon, I felt like I had a deeper appreciation for the novel and a newfound admiration for Diaz himself.
If you’re a fan of Trust or simply enjoy hearing from talented authors, I urge you to consider joining the Literary Society of the Southwest. They host fantastic events throughout the year featuring a diverse range of writers. This was an experience I won’t soon forget, and I have a feeling you won’t either!
